Our pueblo, Our futuro.

Howdy!

New Frontiers is a nonprofit project that seeks to equip young southwest Kansans with the tools to gain political, social, and economic power through grassroots community building.

what is a new frontier?

Redefining the issues that impact young folks in southwest Kansas, centered around the needs of those most marginalized through a social justice lens of historic and current racial and economic inequity.

Join a collective action team!

Our Collective Action Teams (CATs, for short) are an opportunity for community members to get involved directly on issues our generation cares about. Meetings are completely virtual and free to attend! Come meet with folks who care about creating a future we can be proud of through building power.

CATs are divided by topic, each dealing with a main focus as well as other related community action. Don’t see something you’re interested in? Just pick one and we’ll find a place for you in the movement!

Representation

This group focuses on how we can get more folks in office who come from our communities and look like our communities. For the next few months, we’ll be focusing specifically on eliminating at-large districts for the Dodge City City Commission (a.k.a. city council). Don’t know what that is? Keep scrolling and check out our La Voz Del Pueblo Report.

Meeting Dates and Times TBA

Buena vida

This group focuses on everything we need to live a buena vida. That means fighting climate change, adequate housing for all, advocating for better health services, anti-racism, and so much more. For the next few months, this CAT will focus on conducting a door-to-door community needs survey of residents in South and East Dodge City to gauge where our underrepresented neighbors are at and where we can fill in the gaps through community collaboration. This will shape what New Frontiers looks like in the coming years, join us!

Meeting Dates and Times TBA

Mutual Aid

This group focuses on connecting community members to meet the needs of one another in times of hardship. We know that oftentimes, no one’s got us unless we got us. That’s why this group’s sole focus is to meet direct aid requests for things like rent, bills, groceries, etc. from their neighbors. Through a combination of networking, social media posts, and more, this group will work to create a community capable of meeting the needs of those most vulnerable.

Meeting Dates and Times TBA, more info to come

La Voz del Pueblo Report

Mutual aid and civic engagement organization New Frontiers (NF) has released a startling new report, La Voz Del Pueblo, which details the history and harm of at-large districting on racial representation in Kansas government and the urgent need to re-examine the use of the at-large system during the redistricting process. Findings from this report show that over the last 40 years, as diversity increases in Southwest Kansas, Hispanic and Latine government representation decreases under the current at-large municipal government model in Dodge City and minimally improves in other cities in the region. NF anticipates that making the results of this study accessible to everyone will increase the public’s knowledge of how local election systems affect representation and diversity. NF also hopes that this study will encourage local, elected leaders and the communities of SW Kansas to consider looking into the switch from at-large elections to single-member district elections.
